Hell's Gate is the most active geothermal field in the Rotorua area. Long before the 1840's when Europeans found and described the medicinal properties of Tikitere as having 'quite remarkable curative properties', Maori warriors returning from battle bathed to salve their wounds. All the water is ordinary groundwater that has been heated by huge quantities of steam flowing through it, and is not hot water that has come from any great depth. The result is that the chemistry of Tikitere's waters is very different from those of other geothermal areas in the district. |
