Pendle Hill is located in the north east of Lancashire. It gives its name to the Borough of Pendle. It is an isolated hill, separated from the Pennines to the east and the Forest of Bowland to the northwest. In the thirteenth century, it was called Pennul, or Penhul, from Cumbric 'pen' and Old English 'hyll', both meaning hill. It consists of limestone covered by shale and millstone grit. At the summit, a Bronze Age burial site has been discovered. Pendle Hill is noted for the 1612 witch trials, resulting in ten people being hanged for murder by witchcraft. The hill is now popular with ghost hunters and those who wish for a scare. |
Founded in 1896 by Alderman William George Bean, Blackpool Pleasure Beach is a family owned amusement park. Bean created the park "to make adults feel like children again and to inspire gaiety of a primarily innocent character." Located on the coast of the Irish Sea in Blackpool, Lancashire, the Pleasure Beach offers attractions for all ages. Among the many rides are roller coasters ranging from The Big One, which is the tallest and fastest coaster in Europe to The Wild Mouse, which is said to be the last remaining wooden Wild Mouse coaster in the world. If rides aren't your thing, you can stroll along the boardwalk and take in some of the shows and other amusements, or visit the arcade. |
Blackburn Cathedral is located in the heart of Blackburn's town centre. Built in 1826, the original church makes up the cathedral's nave. In 1926 the church was raised to cathedral status. During the early 1930's fundraising began so the church could be enlarged. Enough money was raised by 1938 to begin construction, but due to many interruptions the cathedral was not finished until 1977. More renovations were carried out in 1998, and again in 2000-01. After those renovations were made, the cathedral was finally considered completed ater a construction period of over 70 years. Blackburn is distinctive as being the only town in England with a cathedral. All other cathedrals are in cities. |
Founded in 1886, the present course of Royal Lytham & St. Anne's Golf Course was constructed in 1897. The only significant changes to the course were started in 1919 when the club asked Harry Colt to make recommendations for improvement. The course was lengthened and some of the greens were repositioned. As host to ten Ryder Cups, the Women's and Men's Senior Opens, and numerous other major tournaments, Royal Lytham is one of the premier golf courses in the world. Accomodations are available on site for lodging at the Dormy House and food in the Clubhouse, to make for an enjoyable stay. |
