The Taj Mahal is a mausoleum located in Agra. The Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan commissioned it as a mausoleum for his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Construction began in 1632 and was completed in approximately 1648. Some dispute surrounds the question of who designed the Taj Mahal; it is clear a team of designers and craftsmen were responsible for the design, with Ustad Ahmad Lahauri considered the most likely candidate as the principal designer. While the white domed marble mausoleum is the most familiar part of the monument, the Taj Mahal is actually an integrated complex of structures. |
Golconda Fort is a ruined city and once capital of Hyderbad state before moving to capital to Charminar, and fortress 11 km west of the city of Hyderabad. The city and fortress are built on a granite hill that is 120 meters high and is surrounded by massive crenellated ramparts. The beginnings of the fort date to the 1143, when the Hindu Kakatiya dynasty ruled the area. According to one story, the fort derives its name from Golla Konda, which is the Telugu word for Shepherd's Hill. It is said that a shepherd boy came across an idol on the hill. |
Palolem is a beach in South Goa. The beach is largely unspoiled and is inhabited by both local fishermen and by foreign tourists who live in shacks along the shore. It is about one mile (2km) long and is crescent-shaped - one can view the whole beach from either end. Both ends of the beach consist of rocks jutting out into the sea. The depth of the sea increases gradually, making it safe for average swimmers, and the currents are not fast. Palolem Beach is within 2 kilometres from the market town of Chaudi, which is about one hour's drive from the coastal town of Karwar in Karnataka. |
The Elephanta Caves are the focal point of the Elephanta Island, located in the Mumbai harbour. In 1987, the caves were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is visited by many domestic and foreign tourists. The caves are thought to date back to the Silhara kings of the 9th through 13th centuries (810–1260). Some of the sculptures of this site are also attributed to the imperial Rashtrakutas of Manyakheta (in present day Karnataka), the Trimurti of Elephanta showing the three faces of Shiva almost akin to the Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh. The most important sculpture is that of Trimurti Sadasiva. |
