Kurukshetra literally means "Land of the Kaurava" after the Kuru clan. It is supposed to be the site of the Kurukshetra war, described in the Mahabharata. It is of great importance in Hinduism as this is where the Bhagavad Gita was taught to Arjuna on the battle field, just before the great battle. Thanesar or Sthaneswar, a historical town is located adjacent to what is now newly created Kurukshetra city. Local hearsay identifies the legendary "Kurukshetra" with a nearby obscure hamlet.

The Sultanpur bird sanctuary serves as a protected area for many migratory birds making it an ideal place for bird-watching. One can very easily spot grey pelicans, cormorants, grey and pond herons, egrets, painted storks who tend to congregate and preen. The black-necked storks, white ibis, spoonbills, kingfishers and blue bulls can also be spotted. Today the park is a popular picnic spot for residents of New Delhi and the NCR, especially during the winter months when thousands of birds descend upon this park from all across the globe.

Badhkal Lake is a man-made embankment fringed by hills. It holds back the waters of the lake, making it a great spot for watersports. Situated next to Badkhal village, its name comes from the Persian word 'bedakhal' which means free from interference'. It is located in Badkhal village, 32 km from Delhi. Formed in a natural depression in the Aravalli Hills, the lake is fed by rainwater and a small rivulet. On one inlet in the surrounding hills, there are small, cozy rest huts. There are hotels, restaurants boating, sauna, steam bath and other amenities nearby.

Situated some 12.5 miles (20km) from the city of Chandigarh, Pinjore Gardens lie in the foothills of the lower Shiwalik ranges. One of the most fascinating of the Mugal Gardens, their creation began in the 17th century. Covering an area of 100 acres, they house a mini zoo, Japanese garden, nursery and a numerous picnic areas. According to the Hindu mythology, it is said that it is here that the Pandava brothers (of the "Mahabharatha" epic) had rested during their exile. The gardens also serve as the venue for the annual mango festival.
