Chester Zoo was opened in 1934 by George Mottershead and is the UK's largest zoo at 111 acres. The zoo has a total land holding of approximately 400 acres. The zoo is currently operated by the North of England Zoological Society, a registered charity founded in 1934. The zoo receives no government funding. George Mottershead would collect the animals - lizards and insects - that arrived with exotic plants from abroad to the market garden. In 1903 his interest in creating a zoo was further developed by a visit to Belle Vue Zoo in Manchester.

Beeston Castle perches on a rocky sandstone crag 150 m above the Cheshire plain, was built in 1225 by Ranulph de Blondeville, 4th Earl of Chester, (1170-1232), on his return from the Crusades. It is now ruined and owned by English Heritage. The castle was located and designed both as an impregnable stronghold and a symbol of power. The defences consisted of two parts. Firstly, a small inner bailey on the summit of the hill with a sheer drop on three sides side and a defensive ditch on the other.

Situated in one thousand acres of parkland, Tatton Park House is a neo-classical stately home designed by Samuel Wyatt in 1791 and scaled down and completed by his nephew, Lewis Wyatt, in the early 19th century. Now owned by the National Trust, the house contains paintings by Canaletto and Van Dyck and boasts one of the largest gardens in the north of England. It features a fernery, an orangery, tower garden, pinetum and a Japanese garden which is agreed by most experts to be the finest in the UK. The annual Tatton Park Flower Show is one of the largest horticultural shows in the United Kingdom.
