In 1933, Joseph Strauss was granted $35million in bonds to construct San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge. At 1.7 miles in length and 90 feet wide it took four years to build, opening to pedestrians on 27th May 1937 and vehicles the following day. More than 50 people work on the bridge continuously, touching up the paintwork and replacing corroded rivets. The Golden Gate Bridge was the largest suspension bridge in the world when it was completed and has become an internationally recognized symbol of San Francisco and the United States. |

In 1884, Winchester heiress Sarah Winchester began construction on what is now a 160 room Victorian mansion in San Jose. While it is impressive, it is said to be haunted. There are many oddities including a staircase leading to nowhere and doors opening to blank walls. The mansion is renowned for its size and lack of a master building plan. According to popular belief, Sarah Winchester thought the house was haunted by the ghosts of individuals killed by Winchester rifles, and that only continuous construction would appease them. It is located at 525 South Winchester Blvd. in San Jose, California. |
